How to Apply Your Custom Transfers
A complete heat-press guide for rhinestone hotfix, HTV vinyl, and DTF transfers. Temperature, time, pressure for 20+ fabrics — plus care instructions and troubleshooting.
Watch the process
Two minutes of a rhinestone transfer applied from start to finish — in our LA workshop.
Best results: heat press at the temperature/time chart shown below. Iron also works — see notes.
Before you start
What you'll need for a permanent, professional bond.
- Heat press (recommended)15"x15" or larger, with adjustable temperature and timer.
- Household iron (backup)Without steam. Set to "Cotton" or maximum dry heat.
- Pressing surfaceFirm, heat-resistant. No carpet or padding.
- Teflon or parchment sheetRequired for top protection.
- Garment thermometer (optional)Many presses read incorrectly. Verify the actual surface temperature.

Heat Press Quick Reference
One-page visual cheat sheet — temperatures, timings, and pressure for every transfer type. Save it as your bench reference.
Step-by-step application
The same process for all three transfer types.
-
Pre-press the garment
3–5 seconds at your target temperature to remove moisture and wrinkles. Moisture is the #1 reason transfers don't bond.
-
Position the transfer
Place on the cooled garment in the exact location.
- Rhinestones: clear carrier tape UP, stones DOWN
- HTV: shiny carrier UP, vinyl DOWN
- DTF: printed side DOWN
-
Cover with Teflon
A Teflon sheet or parchment paper protects both the transfer and your press platen from direct contact.
-
Press at the right specs
Match the temperature, time, and pressure for your transfer + fabric from the chart above. Use a thermometer to verify actual platen temperature.
-
Cool and peel correctly
The peel method depends on transfer type.
- Rhinestones: warm peel — wait 10 sec, peel diagonally
- HTV: check packaging — warm or cold peel
- DTF: cold peel — wait until room temperature
-
Final lock-down press
Cover with Teflon and press 5 more seconds. This locks the adhesive into the fabric weave for long-term durability.
⚠️ Common mistakes to avoid
- Pressing too long — stones can scorch, vinyl edges over-melt
- Pressing too light — adhesive doesn't bond, edges lift after first wash
- Skipping the pre-press — moisture in fabric weakens the bond significantly
- Stretching the garment during application — distorts the design permanently
- Washing within 24 hours — full adhesive cure needs 24 hours minimum
✓ Care instructions for finished garments
- Wash inside-out, cold water, gentle cycle
- Dry low or hang to dry
- Never iron directly on rhinestones, HTV, or DTF
- Avoid bleach, fabric softener, and dry cleaning
- For folded storage, place tissue paper between design layers
Troubleshooting
If something goes wrong — here's how to diagnose.
The transfer didn't bond — edges are lifting
This is usually one of three issues. Try in order:
- Verify your press is reaching actual temperature — use a thermometer. Many heat presses read 20–40°F off.
- Increase pressure. Most failures are under-pressure, not under-temperature.
- Add 3–5 seconds of additional press time.
If the issue persists, email support@axiland.com with your press model, fabric type, and transfer type — we'll diagnose remotely.
Stones scorched or vinyl turned dark
You pressed too hot, too long, or both. Reduce temperature by 10–15°F and press time by 3–5 sec on next test. Always test on an inside seam first.
The design isn't where I wanted it
Once applied, hotfix transfers cannot be repositioned. To prevent this on future jobs:
- Mark placement with chalk or a removable fabric marker before pre-pressing
- For chest designs: measure 7–9 inches down from collar center for adults
- For back designs: 4–5 inches down from collar center, between shoulder blades
3D Foam (Puff) HTV crushed flat
Puff vinyl needs light pressure only — full press time but minimal force. If your press has fixed pressure, lift the handle slightly during the press cycle, or place a thicker pad underneath to reduce contact pressure.
The carrier won't peel off cleanly
Two scenarios:
- Carrier sticking, design lifts with it: the press wasn't hot enough or didn't last long enough. Lay the carrier back down, re-press 5 sec, try again.
- Carrier won't release at all: wait — DTF and some HTV are cold-peel only. Let it cool fully to room temperature before peeling.
I don't have a heat press — can I use an iron?
Yes, with caveats. Use a household iron without steam, set to maximum dry heat (Cotton setting). Press firmly with both hands for 25–30 seconds per section (irons are smaller than press platens, so you'll work in passes). Cover with Teflon or parchment. Results are good but not as durable as a heat press.
